Chavez, Guatemalan Wood Sculpture 'Maximon'
Item/Description: Hand carved wood sculpture of Guatemalan Folk Saint Maximon by Nicolas Chavez. Depicting a cigar smoking man in a sombrero and scarves standing in front of candles, a rum bottle and an offering pot. Hand signed to base: Escultura Chavez S. Atitlan 2001. Title carved to base: Maximon. Label adhered to base reads: Santiago village across Lake Atitlan Guatemala, 2002. (Guatemalan artist Nicolas Chavez Sojuel )
Maximon, also known as San Simón, represents light and dark. He is considered a trickster—both a womanizer and protector of virtuous couples. According to legend, the village fishermen traveled frequently for trade and enlisted Maximon to protect the virtue of the wives they left behind. Depending on who you ask, Maximon is Satan, a Catholic saint, or a relic of the pre-colonial Mayan religion. Everyone can agree on what he looks like, at least: He’s a dapper, mustachioed gentleman in a black suit and sombrero. You’ll never mistake him because he’s always smoking a cigarette or large cigar, and his houses of worship are filled with burning candles, bottles of rum or Quetzalteca grain alcohol, and other offerings from his supplicants.
