EXCEPTIONAL M 1850 STAFF & FIELD PRESENTATION GRADE CLAUBERG OFFICER SWORD presented to Major and Engineer Arndt Rosenthal by the HEBREW BENEVOLENT SOCIETY OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.

    Finely detailed ornate brass handle, Brass and japanned metal scabbard, Blade exhibiting fine etched detail. Retains original sharkskin handle with gilt wire wrapping. “US” seen on both handle and etching on blade. Throat of scabbard finely engraved:

“To Major & Engineer / ARNDT ROSENTHAL / of the Brigade and 7th Division / National Guard / NY / From His Friends / November 4th 1862 / Rochester / NY.”       & ; ;nbs p;
   Sword and scabbard are complete and in very fine overall condition, although a few negligible breaks in the sharkskin handle.


    HIGH GRADE CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION SWORD FOR JEWISH FIELD GRADE OFFICER.

    Russian-born Arndt Rosenthal (1828-93) married Bettie Rothschild in 1852 in Rochester, NY. Rosenthal’s unit was organized for 100 days service in the Union Army, serving in Elmira likely on prison guard duty. Rosenthal was discharged in Elmira on August 27, 1864. See Blake McKelvey, The Jews of Rochester, American Jewish Historical Society Vol. 40, No. 1 (1950), pp. 57-73, esp. p. 63.

    Rosenthal died at the Jewish Home for the Aged and Infirm in Yonkers and is buried in the Jewish section of Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, NY.
