TWO CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPHS of two Jewish brothers. Both men standing, wearing civilian clothes with military vests, each holds a straw hat.
Both images identified in brown period ink by the same hand of a fellow soldier:
“[named], Stockholm, Sweden (Comrade of War) 1st NY (Co I and F respectively).”

TWO JEWISH BROTHERS, COMRADES OF WAR.
Both men served in the First New York Infantry for the two year duration of the unit. They subsequently enlisted in the 18th New York Cavalry. The brothers were born in Germany yet somehow indicated they were from Stockholm, Sweden.
* Moritz Levi, later Morris Lewis, served in Company I, 1st NY Infantry and Company D, 18th NY Cavalry.
* Siegfried Levi (Frederick Lewis) served in both aforementioned regiments with his brother.
While in the 1st NY the brothers fought at Second Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. On March 9, 1862 they witnessed the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimac (CSS Virginia). Morris was wounded and captured at the Battle of Mansfield.
The Shapell Manuscript Foundation Roster records that Morris was married by a rabbi and is buried in a Jewish cemetery. Siegfried was wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill.
