18th century pair of Adam style sterling silver weighted candlesticks, John Smith, Sheffield, England, 1777-78, having removable circular bobeches with beaded edges, ornately figured shafts, round nozzles, and circular bases. The shafts are decorated with classical drapery, goat heads, urn form nozzles, and Adam style swags. The bases with raised cameo portraits of Roman nobles or Caesar and crowned with laurel wreaths. The bases and bobeches engraved en suite with a lion bust holding crossed double X's between its paws. Fully hallmarked on bases. 11-1/2''h, 5-7/8''w.
