Pair of George III oval meat platters, London, England, 1770-71, having shaped and gadrooned edges with shallow wells. Both platters are crested on the top edge with dragons supporting a shield with motto ''DULCIUS EX ASPERIS'' (Sweeter After Difficulties). This motto is associated with the Ferguson clan of Scotland. One platter scratch engraved ''No 1 38.16'', the other scratch engraved ''No 2. 36.17 1/2''. Both fully hallmarked, with maker's mark ''IW'' in rectangle, a pellet between letters. 14-1/4''h, 10''w. Total approximate weight 70.0 troy oz. Provenance: Ron Klinger, Philadelphia, PA, 1970.
