George II sterling silver taperstick, possibly Charles Chartier, London, England, 1739-40, having baluster form shaft, and a shaped, stepped base. Block letter monogrammed ''BIA'' under base. Fully hallmarked and with maker's mark ''CH'' under base. 4''h. Total approximate weight 3.4 troy oz. Note: Charles Chartier is the only silversmith shown in ''London Goldsmiths 1697-1837: Their Marks and Lives, '' by Arthur G. Grimwade, 1976, London: Faber & Faber, to be using a fleur de lis above the initials during this period. Provenance: Acquired from Sloan's Auction House.
