George II sterling silver taperstick, Gabriel Steath, London, England, 1742-43, having removable bobeche, typical baluster form shaft, and shaped, stepped base. The bobeche fits snugly and is unmarked. The well of the base is engraved with a crest of a spread winged bird. Fully hallmarked with maker's mark ''GS'' in oval cartouche under base. 4-3/8''h. Total approximate weight 4.5 troy oz. Provenance: Acquired from Sloan's Auction House.
