[Mitchell, Roy, subject]. Pair of Souvenir Photographs of the Hanging of Roy Mitchell, the Last Man to Legally Hanged in Texas. [Waco, TX: McCall, 1923]. Albumen prints of Mitchell, one with his face uncovered with the rope hanging on him, the other with his face covered, and him tied, apparently before he was lifted up to the gallows. Photos approximately 6 x 4”. Some toning, soiled, creasing, each with pencil note (“7-30-1923” the date of his execution) on verso. Very good. Mitchell had been convicted of multiple murders and rapes to which he confessed, although he later claimed his confessions were obtained under duress. He reportedly later recanted his recantation.
