U.S. Model 1863 Springfield Rifle Musket

American Civil War

.60 caliber smoothbore. 40" barrel secured by three rounded screw clamping . NSN. Bright finish, some blued small parts, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion ignition rifle musket. Lock marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD under the bolster and with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}, dated 1864 at tail. {Spread-Winged Eagle} on flat faced bolster as well. No barrel date visible, V/P/{Eagle Head} on left angled breech flat. Weak and smeared script cartouches on the counterpane include an illegible sub-inspection and legible ESA. Gun with some restoration, rear sight, sling swivels and ramrod are modern reproductions. Some parts have modern blue added to them, to replicate the look of some US Model 1863 and 1864 rifle muskets with blued small parts. Includes an incorrect pattern reproduction leather sling.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Condition
Good. Bore fair, bored smooth and moderately oxidized. Metal cleaned in the past and now lightly oxidized with a hazy thin brown patina that appears to be a combination of dried discolored oil and age. Lock with traces of modern blue, apparently trying to replicate the original case hardened appearance. Lock markings clear, lock mechanically functional. Wood sanded with added finish and scattered bumps, dings and mars.
